Munsell Color System

On our website, we provide a listing of “Color Temperature by Color” that breaks each color down into Hue, Value, Chroma and Temperature. The Hue list is in reference to the Munsell Color System.

Munsell Color System

Reference: The Munsell Color System: A Language for Color. Joy Turner Luke.

The Hue number doesn’t correlate directly with Value, Chroma or Hue Temperature. It is simply an alphanumeric system used to create equal space between colors around the perimeter of the Munsell Color Wheel (10 HUE families: Red, Yellow/Red, Yellow, Yellow/Green, Green, Blue/Green, Blue, Purple/Blue, Purple, Red/Purple).

The Value scale is rated from 1 (Darkest) to 10 (Lightest).

The Chroma scale assigns a relative numeric value to a color’s intensity (the higher the number, the further from grey).

Hue Temp is the most subjective of the measurements. For a given color, is it warm (more red) or cool (more blue)?
