Gamblin Artists Colors
Art Sketching Oils (ASO)

In the studio of an Old Master Gamblin Art Sketching Oils are made in the traditional manner. In the studios of the Old Masters, student oil colors were made by removing half the colored pigments and replacing the pigments with marble dust (calcium carbonate). Then and now, colored pigments are the only expensive ingredient of oil paints. The only way to make oil colors more affordable is to take out a portion of the colored pigments.

Even though they want inexpensive oil colors, students still want clean colors with decent working properties. And when they have finished their experimentation and begin preparing art work for thesis or exhibition, they want to use artist grade oil colors which are made from the same colors as their student oils.

Robert Gamblin, painter and paintmaker, formulated Gamblin Art Sketching Oils from the same pure colored pigments that he uses to make Gamblin Artists Colors. Sketching oils are made from approximately half the colored pigments of artist grade oil colors. Gamblin Art Sketching Oils are extended with high quality colorless pigments, including calcium carbonate. No chemical additives are used--no anti-skinning agents and no rheological agents. Driers are added because extenders slow the natural drying time of linseed oil and students want their paintings to dry quickly. Gamblin Art Sketching Oils are available in 37ml & 150 ml tubes and are compatible with all oil painting mediums and other brands of student grade oils.
